Techmobeel update

I’m working on building a mobile computer lab. It’s a motorhome with desks and laptops that will travel from school to school, community to community. The impetus for it was discovering the lack of access that my children had to computers in their schools and then the PEI department of education recently cutting the budget for technology in schools for 2012/13.

I’ve found a motorhome. The engineer working with me on this got the serial number and has contacted the manufacturer and is working on a 3D rendering of the “Techmobeel”.  He owns a 3D printer and we will have a printed off version of it to bring to sponsors soon.

I recently read Steve Job’s biography by Walter Isaacson and was struck by Jobs’ passion for design and simplicity.  I’m planning on keeping the design of the mobile lab simple: white walls, art, classical music playing.  If I think back to when I was introduced to computers in grade 3 in Brookhouse Elementary in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, I can almost see what was on the walls and remember that experience so vividly.

I asked Tom how long it would take to retro-fit the motorhome, likening it to renovating my kitchen which he dismissed as “fairyland talk”… whatever that means.

Regardless, I am closer than ever to getting this up and going and am really excited about it.

My goal in the next couple of weeks is to find a mentor to help with establishing the best business model from the very get-go… franchising, licensing, etc.

Update on the Techmobeel

If this is your first time visiting this blog, please have a look around the pages to learn more about how the Techmobeel began, a little over two years ago.

We are at the prototyping stage!!  Tom Haan of Dundas Designs has started the 3d design of our mobile learning lab. I don’t want to give too much away but I am thrilled with being this close to bringing this project to fruition.

Tom is a bit of a engineering tech genius and builds compact wind turbines in his spare time.

Our goal is to make the mobile lab as green as possible.

One of the fun things about this process is Tom’s input.  He suggested today a 48 inch flat screen that is used as the projector with it on a swivel that comes down from the ceiling.

I think he’s trying to commandeer it and turn it into a “man cave”.
